Coach Diane Smith and Her Impressive Record
Observations and reflections
01-24-2010 Coach Jerry Smith's observations and reflections concerning Coach Diane Smith's 65 consecutive varsity victories over a four season span.
1. Diane always answers compliments with "I have good girls." While that is true no one can imagine the hard work and thought Coach Smith puts into her teams. She is well organized and plans every little detail of practice and games.
Some might think she simply puts a team on the court and they win. Not so. Take that from a person who has coached and watched coaching for many years. Her 600 plus wins are no accident.
2. I remember well when her streak was about to begin back in 2006. I think she rejoiced (giggled) for months as basketball season approached. She said over and over "Just think, I have a point guard who is taller than me." That point guard was an already proven Kate Hutchinson. Hutchinson and her gang came through in a big way with the first undefeated of the consecutive undefeated years. A young Katelyn Poole, now a force on the high school team, had arrived on the scene and became a big factor on that 2006-2007 team.
3. This winning tradition isn't anything new for the Calhoun Middle School basketball coach. A dad, after that first undefeated season was ecstatic. He enthusiastically asked Coach Diane if that was her first ever undefeated season. She calmly told him no, that there had been several along the way. During those years she compiled a record that was at the time of the dad's asking was over 500 wins and has now grown to over 600.
4. A personal observation: It isn't always easy living with a coach who is posting such an impressive record with pressure mounting every game. She claimed today she would be the region champion at the end of the year.
